Managing Inbreeding

1)  In the illustration above, mark with a highlighter the sire and dam’s sire of your mare.

2)   Look in the other lines (columns) for the stallions you prefer and mark them with a different colored highlighter.

3)  Then draw up the pedigree of the foal you want to breed. Make sure that a stallion does not come up twice in the first three generations. If that is the case make it a conscious choice based on a stallion with strong traits he passes on, but avoid with that inbreeding on Wessel.

4)  Breeding of future approved stallions: Jochem blood will become massively present over the coming years. To manage inbreeding and for standing a stallion Jochem-free blood will be very interesting.

Breeding Values Clinic
Leeuwarden, Netherlands
January 11, 2007

This clinic was given by Feline Minkema.  It covers how to pick a good stallion for your mare, based on her shortfalls.  It is a numeric system based on breeding values of stallions.  Being an engineer, I am all about numbers and metrics, so this was great fun for me.

I believe in sharing information, so I am hoping that all those who read this and find it useful will recommend Legacy Friesians to at least one friend!

Clinic on Stallion Selection by Feline Minkema

So here is the English version of the breeding values form, that you should have after a keuring for your mare.  The point is to identify her shortfalls, where she scores less than 25, and then find a stallion with attributes that will improve the shortfalls that you want to breed out.

In this Example, Feline identifies a mare that has 2 elements that need to be improved- Element 17- MORE HAIR (doesn't everyone want this?) and Element 2, lighter head neck connection.  This mare got a 15 on those 2 elements, where 25 is average.  Be careful though because sometimes average is best for an element and sometimes the desired is to maximize the element.  The shaded blocks in the diagram above show the desired values for each element.  If your mare didn't acheive a score in the shaded sections, then these are the areas that the FPS feels you need to work on.

Now in the worksheet below, Feline has filled in the values for Jasper 366.  Your homework is to fill in the values for the other stallions.  Then in the right hand column, add the points for hair and head/neck connection.  The stallion with the highest score is the best choice for this mare considering these 2 elements.

If you think you have the right answers, email me, and I will let you know if you are right!  Enjoy!!!

I have taken the time to translate a few of the stallions, like Onne 376, Jasper 366, Lolke 371, Fabe 348, Gradus 356, -and most of the stallions in the USA are on our "STALLIONS" page.    If you are really curious about a particular stallion that I don't have here, email me!
